Celebrating Love & Groundhog Day With Marci....

Hello Lovely Listeners,
I have to say, winter has been very, very kind for the most part. I still admit to getting the occasional seasonal blues, but music is keeping me happy and productive. There are lots of shows and news to share with you, so I'll cut right to the chase...

COMING UP:
THIS Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 7:30pm, I am spending the evening at Watercolor Cafe hoping beyond all hope that the Groundhog didn't see his shadow that morning...oh, and making sweet music with percussionist Marshal Rosenberg. Joining us that evening will be the magical Nenad Bach Band-a show not to be missed!

For all my eastern LI friends, Sunday, February 12 I couldn't be more tickled than to be once again opening for the remarkable Vance Gilbert at University Cafe, right in my hometown of Stony Brook, NY.

The following evening, Monday, February 13th I'm driving up to Peekskill, NY to be the featured act at the Beanrunner Cafe as a special guest of my beautifully talented and clever friends The YaYas.

Rounding out a short month with lots of gigs, I'll be back on the island headlining at BACCA in Lindenhurst. My very special guest and friend from Australia, Kath Buckell will be opening the night.

Hello Lovely Listeners,
I hope you all enjoyed a festive and stress free holiday season. My husband Gian and I were in New York for New Years Eve for the first time in over a decade and since we didn’t have a party to go to, I decided to create our own party….on a webcast! I was challenged to see if I could write one last song in 2011, and I finished it the day before and was then asked if I would webcast a live debut performance of it, which I did! It was lots of fun and was my most attended webcast so far. You can watch a replay of it here:

I have to admit, after playing it this past Monday at the Jack Hardy Songwriter’s Exchange, I got such great, constructive feedback, I’m now working on a re-write (and a new title!), but the broadcast was fun and a really inspiring way to start off the new year.

COMING UP:l
My first shows of 2012 are coming up this weekend and they’re both new venues for me which is very exciting! Show details are below where it says Upcoming Shows. I will also have a special guest with me for both shows. The wonderful Marshal Rosenberg from Buskin and Batteau Trio wil be playing percussion and offering all around good energy. I can’t even tell you how honored I am and thankful for this opportunity! Aside from BBT, Marshal has performed with: Tom Rush, Aztec Two Step, Barry Manilow, Peter Allen and more!

This coming Saturday, 1/7 we're driving all the way north to Gansevoort, NY, which I'd never even heard of before booking this show. The series is called the Saratoga Connection House Concert and you do need a reservation to get the address. I'll be sharing the evening with my good friends Jody Wexler and Lori Schneider who make up a fabulous duo called Crystal Rose.

On Sunday, we head northeast to perform at a Coffeehouse series called the Piedmont Percolator in Somers, CT. Also performing is Dan Stevens whom I have heard great things about! It will be nice to see some of my CT friends again!

I look forward to a prolific, musical, happy, healthy journey with you in 2012!

Dearest Lovely Listeners,
I decided to send this December newsletter later in the month to be closer to the holidays. All I can say is, wow, we did it! Together we traveled a year like no other and I remain completely humbled and grateful for the support, belief, enthusiasm and kindness so many of you have shown me.

I considered doing sort of a "Year In Review" and overwhelmed myself. It was however, good for me to see how much progress was made, because in all honesty, the lack of sun this time of year sometimes has me questioning myself (the sun as well as the ever-popular carb fest that starts Thanksgiving weekend!). I forgive myself for small digressions and also feel really proud of the work that was done both personally and professionally. I credit so many of you for helping me to find that path once again, and to stay on it. I hope you know how much I appreciate every single one of you!

November was an amazingly validating month:

Last Licks was so filled with joy. Not only did I get to share the evening with my wonderful friend Barbara Kessler, but so many friends from High School surprised us as well as my former Lucky 13 bandmate Cathy Kreger who sang on the last song with us (which sadly didn't get recorded because the battery died on the camcorder half way through the song before it ) We did get this new one at the top of the set for you:

The Bread Box was packed and I actually got to sing with the talented Hugh Blumenfeld and his wonderful band. I really wanted to share this song because it is so special in that it was written as part of a songwriting challenge given at NERFA. Check it out:

NERFA was exhausting and exhilarating as always and filled with moments that had a huge impact on me, like a three hour conversation with Marshal Rosenberg from Buskin and Batteau Trio the morning after they hosted me. This was recorded at 2am at NERFA:

To cap off the month, I was generously invited by Buskin and Batteau Trio to sit in with them at the Folk Society of Huntington. What an incredible honor:

Hello Lovely Listeners,

As I sit here writing, I am feeling incredible thankful for this crazy roller coaster of a year. I started out with so much trepidation about the future and now look back on a year filled with fabulous shows, grand accomplishments and most importantly-all of you! You all give me the inspiration and fire in my gut that encourages me to keep making this music and to keep sharing it, so thank you from the bottom, middle and top of my heart.

COMING UP:
I will be heading up to Kerhonkson NY for my very first solo appearances at the 2011 NERFA Conference. If you're planning on going and would like to catch me, my schedule is below under calendar listings.

I have three shows rounding out November that I'm really excited about. First I'll be back at the Breadbox in Willimantic, CT on Saturday, 11/19 opening for the wonderful Hugh Blumenfeld! Next next day I will be performing at WHUD's Chocolate, Sweets & Holiday Treats up in New Windsor, NY.

Winding down the weekend of gratitude, I couldn't be more excited to be back at Last Licks in Huntington on Saturday, 11/26, with my very special guest and dear friend and former High School mate, the fabulously talented Barbara Kessler!

THE CD:
This past weekend was spent with my friends Warner Cook, John Tabacco, Donna Heitner, Honor Finnegan and Gian DiMauro my hubby and engineer extraordinaire recording background vocals. The whole process got me so giddy, I found myself jumping and dancing around like a little kid. I guess when one is moved to such silliness, you know you're on the right track!

I've been a bit passive about my fundraising efforts for the CD. Honestly, I've never been comfortable asking for help of any kind and money makes me especially squirmy. The reality is, without further funding, I'm going to have a beautiful CD with no way to get it out to you. Many have urged that I start a Kickstarter campaign or something of that ilk. Can you give me some feedback? It would be really helpful as I try to sort this all out.

Happy October! Trick, treat or concerts?

Hello Lovely Listeners,
Fall arrived literally overnight. Warner and I had traveled up to perform at the Towne Crier and it was a balmy 78º. Midnight hit and BAM-the temp dropped down to 48º! Warner explained that it was now officially his birthday and that it was always a cold one, so you can thank him for the departure of summer.

My plans to slow down touring and finish the CD have been mildly thwarted by wonderful gig offerings, which are listed below. Meanwhile, we had a spectacular September which included performing at Central Park!

Here we are at the International Vigil for Peace & Ecology. Notice the really rude man who entered the stage during our performance. He performed right before us and apparently felt compelled to complain about the stage monitoring during my song! LOL! Well as always, the show must go on, right?

Hello Lovely Listeners,
Wow, my head is still spinning from this summer. I decided to send this a little later in the month because between our trip to Switzerland, Hurricane Irene and 9/11, it just felt right to wait a bit.

I could not be more excited about the shows this month. Each one is a tremendous honor and very unique.

On 9/18, I will be performing at a fund raiser for the Beatles' Magical Orchestra which boasts a 60 piece orchestra and has been conducted by the legendary David Amram. Tickets are limited, so please reserve asap by going to: Beatles Magical Orchestra

On Sunday the 25th, I will be performing at the Central Park Bandshell in honor of the 10th Annual Vigil for International Peace & Ecology (I know, I keep pinching myself!). I will perform my song Only Love Matters sometime after 12pm.

To cap off the month, I could not be more excited to be opening for the incredible Nenad Bach Band at the Towne Crier on 9/30. Nenad is an international super star who originates from Croatia who has shared stages with Bono, Luciano Pavarotti, Indigo Girls, Richie Havens and more. I am very humbled to be asked by him to open the show.

The CD is progressing wonderfully (and if you've missed the webcasts while we record, information is below so you can join us!). The amazing David Glaser just laid down some tracks for me and I am so excited about it. I also had the distinct honor of playing with internationally renowned cellist Jean-Philippe Martignone while in Switzerland. If we can get the technology to work, we're hoping he will be doing a guest appearance on the CD as well.

New York, NY…. May 5, 2011... Okay, let’s face it – I am a sucker for a self-penned wedding song that’s specifically written for that wedding day. A few years ago, I came across Jacqui Naylor’s “Celebrate Early and Often ,” and the romantic guy inside me was deeply touched. Recently I have come across Marci Geller’s “First Dance.” A music industry veteran whose creations are featured regularly on television (and more), Marci married her best friend and co-writer Gian DiMauro. The couple will be celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary this coming Saturday, May 7th, 2011.

“We co-wrote our wedding song because we met while working on a writing project together,” Marci told me. “At the time, I was working on a modern day rock musical and had decided to write each of the characters with a different person. A mutual friend suggested I work with Gian.”

Marci and Gian convened at his recording studio to collaborate on a song that they never ended up quite finishing. Two weeks later Gian proposed, and after a healthy engagement period, the two married in 1995. They decided that since their intended composition was never finished, then they might as well write one for the wedding - and that’s exactly what happened!

Striking out on her own after getting “Lucky”

Miller Place, NY…. April 2011... Shortly after the turn of the new year, Suffolk County singer/songwriter and founding member of the wildly popular duo Lucky 13 Marci Geller announced that she and partner Cathy Kreger were parting ways and moving forward as solo artists. “I’m so used to being a member of Lucky 13, it’s going to take some adjusting to get used to being me again!” smiles Geller.

Marci’s career prior to founding the now defunct group is something to marvel at. Her history includes performances on “Live! With Regis,” “Good Day NY,” has a multitude of soundtrack placements and toured internationally as the support act and back up vocalist for Blackmore’s Night. She was recently chosen by Independent Songwriter Magazine (ISWM) as the “Editors Choice” as one of their favorite songwriters of the last decade. Called a “Female John Prine” by Gail Larkin, UUBR and an “East Coast Joni Mitchell” by Judy Antoon, Harid Conservatory, she is known for her strong songwriting skills and emotionally raw performances.

Rumors of a 2011 CD release have been heard and when prompted Geller enthusiastically replies “The new CD is already in progress and I’m working with some of my favorite musicians including Jay Mafale from the Yayas and David Werner Cook who produced Here on the Edge with Gian DiMauro and I a few years back.”

During her tenure with Lucky 13, she opened for such notables as James Maddock, Vance Gilbert, Jimmy Webb, Jack Hardy & KJ Denhert. Her last releases were touted as: “brilliant songwriting - Great, thoughtful lyrics and very convincing melodies, It is really great to hear an album where the songs, the performance, the overall feeling, really creates "a picture" for the listener” –Peter Holmstedt, Hemifran.

Marci’s calendar is filling up with solo dates and she will be performing her first area solo show of the year at the Beanberry in Miller Place, NY on Friday, April 22nd. “For some reason, I thought when I left Lucky 13, things would slow down a bit for me,” notes Geller. “If anything, I’m busier than ever before…and I guess that’s a good thing!” With a new CD, a fertile tour schedule and a desire to give a performance that leaves her audiences breathless, this tireless chanteuse promises to deliver. “I am so thankful for my time with L13. Setauket, NY…. Friday, September 10, 2010... How does a band that has achieved national recognition, radio play and sales success in its first year handle the departure of a core member?

Lucky 13, the CD, created a ground swell when it hit national radio in late 2008, with three unique women, three bodies of work, and one harmonizing sound. It was supposed to be a one-time celebratory Sonic Underground CD release for the label’s 13^th anniversary. Co-founder, band member and Three Village resident Marci Geller said, “There was such a great response every time we performed together, we thought why not follow the signs and become a group? And so we did, under the same name.”

Then one of the trio members, Susan DeVita, realized touring and single parenthood weren’t working. “Losing a vital member to the group made us question what the future would hold,” explains remaining members Geller & Huntington resident Cathy Kreger.

Initially the group reached out to legendary vocalist Diane Garisto for recommendations. Garisto saw how quickly the first show was coming up and offered to sit in with the successful trio. After six months of navigating logistical and scheduling conflicts, Geller and Kreger officially announced in August of 2010 that they were moving forward as a duo. “The one thing that has remained constant is the joining of our voices, the music and the mission shared between Cathy and me,” affirms Geller. “So why reinvent the wheel? Our destiny has been staring us in the face for a long time and now that we've regrouped and refocused, we feel more passionate than ever before.”

In the short time they have been together, Lucky 13 has garnered airplay and in-studios at radio stations across the Northeast including: WFUV, WSHU, WPKN, WUSB, WOR, WHUD, WLIU to name a few. They were a featured performer on the Fox Morning Show, WLNY TV and a feature article in the New York Times sang their praises. Hallowell, ME…. Monday, May 3rd, 2010... How does a band that has achieved national recognition, radio play and sales success in its first year handle the departure of a core member?

Lucky 13, the CD, created a ground swell when it hit national radio in late 2008, with three unique women, three bodies of work, and one harmonizing sound. It was supposed to be a one-time celebratory Sonic Underground CD release for the label’s 13^th anniversary. Co-founder and band member Marci Geller said, “There was such a great response every time we performed together, we thought why not follow the signs and become a group?” “And so we did, under the same name.”

The group reached out to legendary vocalist Diane Garisto for recommendations. Garisto saw how quickly the first show was coming up and offered to sit in for the successful trio. “As soon as we performed the first song of that first show together, we knew we found a new magic.” shares Geller. Garisto’s presence set the band on a trajectory that the band had hoped for, but hadn’t imagined so quickly. Garisto joins the project with a healthy resume that includes singing on Saturday Night Live, The David Letterman Show, albums for Paul Simon and Billy Joel and touring with Steely Dan and the legendary Laura Nyro.

In the short time the trio has been together, Lucky 13 has garnered airplay and in-studios at radio stations across the Northeast including: WFUV, WSHU, WPKN, WUSB, WOR, WHUD, WLIU to name a few. They were a featured performer on the Fox Morning Show, WLNY TV and a feature article in the New York Times sang their praises. They have opened for such notables as Vance Gilbert, John Flynn, Jack Hardy & KJ Denhert.

After a tumultuous first year that ended in one of it’s core members leaving, the trio launched it’s second year with the addition of legendary back up vocalist Diane Garisto who is now not only a lead singer, but contributing percussion and her well crafted songs to round out the repertoire.

Lucky 13 unites the talents of Connecticut native Cathy Kreger, Marci Geller & Diane Garisto whose solo credits prior to the project include: opening for Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal (Kreger), Performing on Live! With Regis & being named one of the Top 10 Best Singer/Songwriters by Performing Songwriter Magazine (Geller) and touring with Laura Nyro, Steely Dan and singing on Graceland and River of Dreams (Garisto). “We have all experienced success on our own, but at this age, it’s nice to have some company on the road…that and it sure helps having extra hands to lug equipment!” teases founding member Marci Geller. Together they have a synergistic blend of folk, jazz and blues woven together by warm and rich harmonies.

Happy New Year Lovely L13 Friends!

We hope you all enjoyed a joyous, happy healthy holiday season and are all nice and rested up to join us at our upcoming shows!

We're starting off 2010 with some personnel changes that we think will enable us all to move forward in a wonderfully positive manner. Susan will be leaving Lucky 13 to focus on her family. This is a mutually amicable decision and she will always be a treasured part of our history.

So without further ado, we are so incredibly excited to welcome Lucky 13's newest addition, Diane Garisto. In a much varied career, Diane has toured as a vocalist with major recording artists such as Steely Dan and Laura Nyro and was fortunate to sing on Paul Simon's multi-platinum award-winning album, Graceland, and Billy Joel's evocative River of Dreams. She's appeared on The Today Show, Late Night with David Letterman, and Saturday Night Live, and shared the mike with such musical legends as Patti Labelle, Al Jarreau, Carly Simon, and George Benson.

We have been having an amazing time rehearsing with Diane and we all love how magically our voices joined together!

WATCHUNG — The Watchung Arts Center continues the fourth season of its award-winning concert series called ‘Powerful Women of Song’ by presenting the pop-folk trio, Lucky 13, on Saturday, November 7, at the Watchung Arts Center at 18 Stirling Road in Watchung. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m., and the concert begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $21 online and $23 at the door.

Lucky 13 unites the talents of Cathy Kreger, Marci Geller & Susan DeVita. The trio was formed after the three singer-songwriters appeared on a compilation CD of the same name released by Sonic Underground. Response to their harmonies and musical chemistry inspired them to officially form a band in July of 2008.

Among their recent credits, they have performed on WFUV, Fox Morning Show and had a New York Times feature article. They have opened for Jack Hardy, KJ Denhert, Vance Gilbert, and sung backup vocals for Jay Mankita. Just a quicky as we head up to Hillsdale for our first camping/singing Falcon Ridge Folk Festival extravaganza!

We will be camping at Jack Hardy's campsite (thank you Stu Kabak!!!) and have a few camp-side performances scheduled:

We recently received the sad news that the wonderful IMAC Theater of Huntington has closed it's doors for good. We will be on News 12 Tuesday, June 23rd from 5pm until 11pm, talking about our affinity for IMAC and how much they will be missed.

On brighter notes (and this incessant rain doesn't make "bright" very easy these days!), we have 2 shows this week in Huntington:

New York, NY-June 1, 2009----Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Jude Johnstone’s last appearance in the New York area was her national television debut on CBS’s “The Saturday Early Show” in March 2006. Johnstone returns to the area for the Music & Lyrics Tour with her first area appearance on July 12 at Towne Crier, Pawling, New York. Johnstone will share the bill on all her shows with the exceptionally talented trio Lucky 13.

While you may not know the name Jude Johnstone, chances are you’ve already heard her songs. A stellar list of artists have covered

Johnstone’s songs including Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks, Bette Midler, Trisha Yearwood, Johnny Cash and Emmylou Harris. Johnstone’s songs have been used in television shows “Army Wives,” “Lie To Me,” and in Showtime’s new series “Nurse Jackie.” Johnstone has received rave reviews for her reflective, intelligent songwriting delivered in her passionate, soulful voice.

Perhaps it was fate that prompted Johnstone to randomly contact east coast singer/songwriter and Lucky 13 band member Marci Geller on the popular social network Facebook. The two formed an instant friendship and through Facebook messaging and emails, they started toying with the idea of a tour.

“I was completely taken aback when I saw that Jude had “friended” me on FB (Facebook), exclaims Geller. I had been a fan of hers for years and hearing from her was extremely validating. Geller who is one of the founding members of the acoustic trio Lucky 13, which includes Cathy Kreger and Susan Devita, is also co-owner of Sonic Underground, a NY based independent label.
